The Harrison Rush/Fire Drill Weekly Wrap-Up

A Brief, Reliable, Rundown of the Investment Banking Recruiting Market.

Emotional Intelligence Meets Artificial Intelligence

The technical bar hasn’t dropped—strong modeling skills, Excel fluency, and sharp analytical thinking are still essential. But as deal teams adopt and integrate A.I. into workstreams, the term “Emotional Intelligence” is being used more often than before. In previous years, hiring managers wanted junior bankers who could crank out Excel models and PowerPoint presentations. These days, they still wish for the technical chops but are also looking for bankers who can act like human beings. Who possess excellent communication skills, can read a room, and know how to get along with others. As one senior MD put it, “I need people who can handle both the spreadsheet and the room.” Technical skills can be trained, but self-awareness, communication, and empathy are much harder to teach. Banking is going through a transformation. The transformation is being driven by digital, blockchain, and Artificial Intelligence technologies. Banks that embrace the transformation will survive, and those that do not will fade away. A.I. will impact operational jobs, but firms need to evolve.

2026 Outlook

Banks continue to look for specialization. Areas of growth will include Tech, Business Services, Healthcare, Power, and Utilities. Front office lateral recruiting at the junior level will be flat to slightly up.
